Effurun Shooting: Police Promise Justice as Officer Faces Disciplinary Action,
The Nigeria Police Force has spoken out about the deadly shooting of a man named Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State. The incident happened on the 26th of April 2026 and has since drawn strong reactions from the public.
In an official statement, the police condemned what took place. They said the shooting was not in line with their rules and that the officer responsible has already been pulled out of the field.
According to preliminary reports, operatives from the Effurun Area Command were acting on a tip-off from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. Members of a transport union had reportedly stopped a suspect who was trying to send a parcel through a waybill service.
When the parcel was checked, it was found to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition. The suspect was identified as Mene Ogidi.

But things took a wrong turn while officers were trying to take him into lawful custody. The team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police named ASP Nuhu Usman, fired his weapon. Police authorities say that action broke their rules and led to the death of the suspect.
The police leadership has ordered that ASP Usman and his entire team be transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. There, they will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee. The committee will handle both internal punishment and possible prosecution.

This move is seen as the police trying to show that they do not support extra-judicial actions. But many Nigerians are waiting to see what comes next.
The Inspector-General of Police sent a message of sympathy to the family of the deceased. He assured them that the law would take its course and that justice would not be pushed aside.
He also asked members of the public to stay calm while the disciplinary and legal processes go on. The police leadership said it has no room for officers who abuse their authority or act outside the law.
The Effurun shooting has added to a long list of cases where people have lost their lives during police operations. While some have praised the police for moving quickly to punish their own officer, others say actions alone are not enough — results matter.
For the family of Mene Ogidi, no disciplinary action will bring back their loved one. But a fair and open process may at least give them some closure.
The police have promised zero tolerance for any conduct that hurts public trust. Whether that promise holds will depend on what happens in the coming weeks at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
