“My Son Attempted Suicide in That School” — Ex-Student Shares Harrowing Story as Igbinedion Bullying Scandal Deepens (Videos).
The disturbing video that surfaced online over the weekend has continued to generate reactions, with new information emerging about the families of the students involved in the brutal assault at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City, Edo State .
The footage, which has since gone viral, captured two senior students beating a junior colleague identified as Israel, a Senior Secondary School 2 student, until he became unconscious. The victim, who recently lost his father and whose mother is reportedly ill, was seen being flogged with a belt, kicked repeatedly, and stomped on while a third student recorded the incident.

Students Expelled, But Nigerians Say It’s Not Enough
Following public outrage, the school management moved quickly to expel the students involved. In a statement dated March 13, the school described the behaviour as “deeply disturbing” and a direct violation of the values they uphold . The two students sent packing are Choice Osarumen Asoro and Dino Uyi.

But the expulsion has done little to calm public anger. Social media users are now demanding tougher punishment, especially after learning more about the families of the accused students.
According to multiple reports, Dino Uyi’s father is a senior management staff member at First Bank of Nigeria . This revelation has sparked fresh debate about privilege and accountability.
A social media user who commented on the matter wrote: “So I heard Dino Uyi is allegedly the son of a senior management staff at First Bank. It is understandable that most bankers will not have enough time to parent their children as they ought due to the demanding nature of the job, but he should also be called out just like they’re calling Choice’s father out.”
The user went on to note that while social media has focused heavily on Choice—likely because his father is better known—Dino Uyi actually inflicted more damage on the victim’s head before Choice joined the assault.
“If we don’t have laws in Nigeria that can allow teenagers serve jail terms, then provisions should be made for their parents to serve on their behalf. Both Dino Uyi and Choice Osarumen Asoro parents should be given fair sentences,” the user added.
Choice’s father, Timothy Asoro, is said to be a hotelier and the owner of Asotime Events Centre.

Police Move In as Government Vows to Prosecute
The Edo State Government has ordered the arrest and prosecution of all students involved in the incident . Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, the State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, said the government will not tolerate such behaviour in any of its educational institutions.
“Three students were involved in the incident, and the Commissioner of Police has asked that the parents and the students report to the command. They will definitely face prosecution,” Afegbua said.

He noted that although the suspects are minors, the law provides measures for handling such cases. “There are juvenile correctional centres where they can be kept if the courts make a pronouncement regarding prosecution,” he added.

The state governor, Monday Okpebholo, has directed the Edo State Police Command to carry out a thorough investigation. A five-member investigative committee has also been set up to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather testimonies from witnesses.
Parents Protest at School Premises
On Monday, angry parents and concerned citizens stormed the school premises demanding justice . The protesters, carrying placards with various inscriptions, blocked the entrance gate to the school.
Security was heavily beefed up around the school, with personnel of the Department of State Services stationed at the gate to verify the identity of visitors before allowing them in .
Tempers flared when Choice’s father arrived at the school with some policemen. Parents thought he had come to harass them for calling for justice and began booing both father and son as they headed towards their car. The visibly remorseful fair-skinned boy was seen walking away and looking back at the jeering crowd with clasped hands raised in what seemed like an apology.

The crowd was not moved. They continued shouting: “See papa, see papa. Shame on you, shame on you. Born trouser pickin; as you fine reach, useless child, bastard child” .
However, the mood changed when the nonagenarian proprietor of the school, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, arrived. The parents cheered him, chanting “Na our papa be dis o, eh, we nor get another one” . The Esama addressed the crowd and assured them that measures have been put in place to prevent future occurrences .
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Adesuwa Division, CSP Oluku Othuke, also appealed for calm, reminding the parents that he too is a parent and understands their pain .
One Family Apologises
The Asoro family has issued a public apology to the victim and his family. In a statement signed by Tim Asoro, the family said they were shocked and deeply embarrassed after seeing the video of the incident involving their child .
The family admitted that the behaviour displayed in the video was unacceptable. “We were ashamed that our son took part in an act that caused another student pain and fear,” the statement read.

They expressed relief that medical checks showed the victim did not suffer physical injury but acknowledged the emotional pain and distress the incident must have caused.

According to the statement, the family has held serious discussions with their son since the incident became public. “He has shown regret and understands that his actions affected not only the victim but also the school and our family” .
The family said they respect the disciplinary action taken by the school and want their son to learn from this mistake and grow into a better person. Counselling and proper guidance will be part of the process to help him change his behaviour.

The Third Person: Culprit or Conscience?
One aspect of the video that has sparked debate is the role of the third student who recorded the incident. In the footage, this person can be heard pleading with the attackers to stop. “Please, that’s enough,” he was heard saying while continuing to film.
Some Nigerians are calling for his expulsion as well, arguing that he did nothing to physically stop the attack or report to authorities. Others believe he should not be punished since he was clearly uncomfortable with what was happening and begged them to stop.
The school has reportedly expelled him alongside the two main attackers .
Old Students Speak Out: “This Has Been Going On For Years”
As the outrage continues, former students of Igbinedion Education Centre have come forward to share their own painful experiences. One female ex-student, in a Facebook post that has since gone viral, revealed that she attempted suicide in the year 2000 to get out of the school .
“I was taking a little mental health break from Instagram, but then somebody sent me a video about my alma mater, Igbinedion Secondary School in Benin City in Nigeria, and I just had to hop on here,” she wrote. “Because when I was saying it, it almost seemed like I was making things up” .
She claimed the viral video is “not that bad” compared to what used to happen. “I recall boys slapping girls; I recall boys taking off belts and flogging girls in open spaces in the middle of the day. And honestly, where were the adults?” she asked .
She also shared a terrifying story about armed robbers breaking into the girls’ hostel while she was a student. “The girl that ran to call the matron was shot at by the armed robbers. I need for you to know that Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City, Nigeria, did not notify our parents” .
According to her, when an older sister of her classmate tried to warn parents who were dropping their children the next day, the principal slapped the young lady, called her a prostitute, and told her that if the robbers had tried to assault her, it was her fault .
The school allegedly locked students in the dormitory so they couldn’t come out and tell other parents not to drop their kids off.

“I personally jumped off a building and tried to kill myself in the year 2000 to get out of that school. And I have a friend and a classmate who tried to hang himself from a ceiling fan three times to escape life in Igbinedion,” she revealed .
She also disclosed that many children picked up drug habits from the school. “Last year, in July of 2025, I went to Mexico and cremated my brother and brought his ashes home. He lived his life with a drug problem he picked up from Igbinedion that he was never able to shake” .
Celebrity Reaction
Afrobeats star Davido has also weighed in on the matter, describing the students involved as “fucking animals” and the act as “so disgusting” . His comment on X (formerly Twitter) has further amplified the conversation online, with many of his followers agreeing that tougher action is needed.
What Happens Next?
The Edo State Police Command has assured the public that the perpetrators will be arrested and made to face the law accordingly, in line with their respective ages . The Commissioner of Police has asked the parents and the students to report to the command, and prosecution will follow after investigation .
For now, the victim Israel is receiving medical care, and the school has assured that he is being given independent medical evaluation and care . But for many Nigerians, this incident has opened old wounds and raised uncomfortable questions about the safety of children in boarding schools, the role of parents in monitoring their children’s behaviour, and whether expelling students is enough punishment for acts of brutal violence.
As one protester put it: “What happened at this school is not acceptable in our society and we must all rise up to condemn it”
